Throwback Thursday

Came across this short clip my good friend Harry put up quite a while ago. It was taken during a coaching session with Harry before I headed off to Reunion Island for the AWWP Tour.

Toome

Known as Toome wave in the town of Toome, County Antrim NI. The wave is accessed from the Antrim side of the river Bann although the wave itself is closer to the Magherafelt side. The wave is on a short stretch of the River Bann between Lough Neagh and Lough Beg and works late spring to early autumn when the water levels begin to drop. This was actually my first time there despite regularly driving past it for years.

The wave itself is excellent although there are two visible iron girders in the water that are a pain. I guess that is why folk aren't looping in it too often.

Some efforts have been made to have the girders removed but as yet have not been successful. It would undoubtedly be the best and most consistent freestyle feature in the Country if they were removed.

Its definitely worth a visit and if you are there spend a few quid in the town and let the locals know why you are there. I think the best way to get the metal out is to have the backing of the community who can also approach Irish waterways and the Council if they see a benefit to having people come to the wave. The town was bypassed in early 2000's so like most bypassed towns may have felt the financial pinch.

Got a wee article in 'The Paddler' this month. Basically its just an overview of what Surf Kayak and Waveski is about for the uninitiated! Hopefully get some larger features in the future and expose our discipline to the wider paddling community.

Forward Paddling Clinic with Kayakmor

We recently took a spin to Galway to chat all things forward paddling with renowned  marathon and surfski paddler Jim Morrisey.
The day began with some video analysis of Oscar Chalumpsky and Greg Barton's style and technique, drawing out the key components to perfect forward paddling. We then took these key points out to the ergo were Jim guided us toward correct performance and effective forward paddling. Finally we hit the water and applied what we had learnt to the surfskis and double racing kayak.
Thanks to Jim at Kayakmór for a really informative and productive session.

If you haven't already checked out 'The Paddler' online magazine, its definitely worth a read. Plenty of SUP articles in the current March issue as well as an interview with legendary kayaker now sup manufacturer Corran Addison. There is also an article by ex World surf kayak champion Simon Hammond and loads more. The magazine is produced by Peter Tranter who was behind the BCU publication 'Canoe Focus' for years.

Futureski Footbars

Composite and paddlesurf innovators Future waveski & kayaks have produced these carbon push bars. I think they are a standard fitting on their custom skis. This one is fitted to my KS. Fits perfectly, and the foot loop plugs are strong enough to take the extra force they are put under.
The bars put the foot at a more upright position and allow a greater area to deliver drive through the board. These are a great addition to your ski and well made in true Futureski form. www.futurekayaks.com

Subgraviti's latest release 'Coolcara'

Xaver Walser's latest movie,Coolcara. Follows Xaver's travels, hanging out with waveskiers in J Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Australia and Portugal. Footage is a few years old at this stage so some of the riders are currently surfing far better, therefore doesn't do them justice. Arthur Schott, Andre Burger, Mathieu Babarit and current World champion Virgil Humbert are the stand outs for me. The movie is about an hour long and costs $12 for a one year subscription through Vimeo. Good work Xaver! And if this is truly your last film then I'd like to thank you for the amazing contribution you have made to the sport over the years! Take a bow!

European Waveski Titles 2012

The European Waveski Titles took place in Ericiera in Portugal at the end of April. The number of competitors was down on previous years but the talent on display was definitely up! Around 40 competitors from Europe battled it out at Ribera de las for titles in the Open, Junior, Ladies, New Age, Senior and Masters divisions.
As usual, Portugal did not let us down. Two days before the comp the swell was 3.7 metres from the N West at 12 seconds. Time for free surf at a slightly sheltered spot South of Ericiera. The swell dropped to around the 2 metre mark for the comp    at Ribera. The French entries dominated the field but there was also a strong presence from Ireland and the UK who had 9 riders in total. The competition was a really relaxed event with a holiday atmosphere. The organisers had a sports massage tent set up for competitors, lunches arranged and a wacky band who played on the beach and car park. The local crew have to be acknowledged for their respect and support of the event throughout the four days of competition.
So a big thank you to all the folk that organised the event, in particular Cisco Sariavo, Mafra municipality, the Ribera de Las surf club, the lodge and the cafe at Ribera for food and refreshments! And a big thank you to Mitchell Blades, Gath, Duem Stuff, Polar for continued support.

Paddlefest 2012

Well that's it, Paddlefest done and dusted for another year! This was the first time the event was not run at an Outdoor Centre. Instead it was based at a hotel in Moville and used the local hall and pub for talks and chillin after a long day on the water.
Sea paddlers had it good sun and calm oceans. Not so good for the whitewater guys who had to settle for the Mourne. The coaching made up for it though. I heard great reports from colleagues who really enjoyed the progressive coaching and fresh ideas. We were pretty limited with the surf too. We travelled to South Donegal on day one and settled for small waves in the North for day two. I had the pleasure of working alongside two World champ surf kayakers Chris Hobson and Andy McCllelend for the weekend which was good fun. Hopefully these guys will push forward with their coaching in the future as they have lots of knowledge to share.
A good weekend had by all! Roll on Paddlefest 13!

Happy New Year !

OA wishes everyone a happy new year and the strength to stick to those resolutions and goals for 2012 and beyond!
I intend to do more river running this winter. look out for inland courses next year. looking forward to the new surf ski my Dad won in South Africa arriving March. There is plenty of scope for this sport in the North West that's for sure. Also there are the European Waveski Titles in Ericiera Portugal to look forward to. Thats in April/May, and there should be a few folk from Ireland going to that.
Some exciting news too. OA has a new partner for 2012. DUEM kayak gear has come on board so we are looking forward to working with them and the Irish dealer. More news to follow on that one.
So, once again thanks for all the support during the year and happy new year to all!! See you on the water in 2012, Carry on!

Paddlefest 2012

Paddlefest is back in Donegal for 2012.  Moville is the venue and offers a range of facilities for the surf paddler, river runner, freestyler and sea kayaker.
There will be a range of workshops in all disciplines.
I will be doing a session on the fundamental movement skills that underpin surf kayak and waveski. This will be based on and off the water and is aimed at developing a greater understanding of the core skills that support athlete development.
Expedition paddler and founder of the ‘Association of Paddlers and Coaches’, Olly Sanders will be a guest coach as will Olaf Obsommer. Olaf is the man behind ‘Adidas Sick Line’, is an all round hellboater adventurer and has his name in the Book of legends! I can’t wait to hear his boating stories from around the world!
I think this one will sell out pretty quick so book early!

Canoeing Ireland Coaches Workshop

Thanks to Benny Cullan, Neil Flemming and Canoeing Ireland for the coach update workshop on Saturday. During the day long session we looked at the coaching structure of CI and the LTAD plan. Later we looked at periodisation and how & where this fits within the LTADP depending on the age group being coached.

The afternoon session was based around the results from our lactate tests. How these tests determine how we should adapt our training for better results. Really useful info and something that we will incorporate into the Irish Kayak and Waveski riders programmes.

Typical results of an almost all  anaerobic training programme. More aerobic base needed I think! That line will be flat in a few months!

Ocean Addicts Coaching & Development week

Untitled from sam jones on Vimeo.

Here is some footage from the recent Ocean Addicts waveski & surf kayak coaching camp. Really good group of people on the course so made it a very enjoyable week. The footage is from sessions where students were working on various skills such as getting air, cut backs and re-entries. Plenty of spills so we know they were trying! Thank you again to everyone involved for making it a great week. Look out for the upcoming feature on kayaksurf.net from their roving reporter Pete Copp who has some quality pictures too!
